Taking a break from the constant application process has been refreshing and guilt-inducing at the same time. It’s nice not to get rejection emails. My CV/resume needs some work, but I’m not sure how to fix it without relevant teaching experience. Hence my two-fold strategy: 1) document business experiences that will mirror the selection criteria; 2) start looking for part time, block-time teaching positions. The fact I have paid employment in another field has been good for paying bills, but perhaps not so good for career change motivation. What has motivated me was an article I read recently. What I Learned About Life at My 30th College Reunion in the online version of The Atlantic is Deborah Copaken’s account of her Harvard reunion and what she discovered. It lists what she refers to as simple shared truths, but the one that caught my eye – and the one that subtitles the article – states, “Every classmate who became a teacher or doctor seemed happy.” Just reading that sentence makes me happy.
